Amy Shark released her fourth studio album, soft pop , on July 24 after creating the 11 song project during an intense writing and recording sprint in Wales. The Australian singer worked out of longtime producer Dann Hume’s studio inside a converted church, with isolation and a one month deadline forcing her back into her creative routine. Shark’s husband and manager, Shane Billings, booked the sessions even though Shark had no new material ready and was feeling exhausted. The Gold Coast native initially wanted to cancel, but Billings gave her four weeks to write the album, turning a creative slump into a very literal deadline. How Did Amy Shark Get Her Spark Back? Shark put her phone on do not disturb for the entire writing month and kept distractions to a minimum, with a local café in Barry serving as her main escape from the studio. The result is a deliberately intimate record with no co writers, guest features, or drums, built around 11 songs that Shark created in full focus. soft pop includes the previously released tracks “The Biggest Dick,” “Our Last Fight,” “Child of Divorce,” and “It’s Kinda Hot.” Shark said the project gave her something to commit to when songwriting felt like both the thing she needed and the thing she least wanted to do.
