Ben Affleck said Monday that making and reshooting 2017’s Justice League was the low point of his career, after Zack Snyder left the film and Joss Whedon took over. Affleck also connected the troubled production to the collapse of his planned Batman solo movie. Affleck described Snyder’s exit, which followed leadership disputes and the death by suicide of Snyder’s 20 year old daughter, Autumn Snyder, as an especially painful turning point. Affleck said the circumstances surrounding the production felt exploitative, while clarifying that he learned details about reported experiences involving Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, and others secondhand. How Did Justice League Derail Affleck’s Batman? Justice League earned roughly $661 million worldwide, but the film underperformed against expectations for DC’s first live action team up featuring characters such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Affleck said the experience played a role in his Batman project falling apart, with the character later recast for Matt Reeves’ The Batman , starring Robert Pattinson. Affleck has said he enjoyed playing an older, damaged Bruce Wayne inspired heavily by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns . Snyder’s original vision eventually reached HBO Max through a four hour extended cut after the fan driven “Release the Snyder Cut” campaign, an outcome Affleck credited Snyder for making possible.
