Bob Chapek is revisiting his Disney exit in his upcoming memoir, Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth , excerpts from which appeared four years after Disney removed him as CEO. Chapek defends theme park price increases and says Bob Iger helped engineer his downfall. According to excerpts first reported by The New York Times, Chapek argues that his abrupt dismissal damaged his reputation despite what he describes as a lack of wrongdoing. Chapek also claims Iger told Hollywood contacts that Chapek was shutting him out while Iger remained at Disney as executive chairman. Is Bob Chapek Sorry? Absolutely Not Chapek stands by the business strategy he used while leading Disney Parks and Experiences and later serving as CEO. That strategy included higher prices for food and annual passes, the end of Disney World’s free airport shuttle, and paid access to services that replaced the former complimentary Fastpass system. Those decisions increased theme park revenue but intensified criticism from Disney fans who said the company was pricing out families and once in a lifetime visitors. Chapek also credits himself for helping elevate current Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro , saying he repeatedly advocated for D’Amaro’s promotion when D’Amaro was still relatively unknown inside the company. Chapek has largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving Disney, apart from a short board role at medical technology company Masimo. Iger, meanwhile, returned to Thrive Capital after ending his second Disney CEO run, and Thrive now holds a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers following a reported $12.5 billion purchase of the NBA franchise.
