Chase Stokes revealed on Aug. 21 that his liver and kidney were failing after Outer Banks wrapped its fifth and final season. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , the 33-year-old actor said he stepped away from work for intensive therapy, medical testing and a serious physical and mental reset. Stokes said doctors were monitoring him with blood tests every other week, while he also dealt with what he described as an “alarmingly low” testosterone level. He underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, a treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate brain nerve cells and can help address major depression symptoms. Why Did Chase Stokes Step Away? Stokes said he had spent years identifying more with John B than with himself, making it difficult to transition from playing a teenager to living as a 33-year-old adult. Rather than jump directly into another production, Stokes said he focused on getting his health back to baseline instead of masking the damage by staying busy. Chase Stokes described the period as frightening but said the work has helped him feel like himself again. He also said continuing therapy remains a priority, adding that he might not have had much time left if he had ignored his body, a realization that pushed him to take his recovery seriously.
