Christopher Nolan ’s The Odyssey will return to select IMAX theaters and 70mm screens beginning October 9, Universal Studios announced Tuesday. The Matt Damon led epic has earned $1.76 billion worldwide, making it Universal’s highest grossing movie ever before inflation adjustments and giving Nolan another reason to turn moviegoing into an event. The film passed Jurassic World, which set Universal’s previous worldwide record with $1.67 billion in 2015, during The Odyssey’s ninth weekend in theaters. The blockbuster has also become Nolan’s biggest film, surpassed the inflation adjusted total for The Dark Knight Rises, claimed the all time R rated box office record, and become IMAX’s highest grossing movie ever. Why Is The Odyssey Coming Back? The Odyssey is Nolan’s third movie to cross $1 billion globally, arriving 18 years after The Dark Knight became the first superhero film to reach that milestone. The film is also the first non sequel and non remake since Avatar in early 2010 to earn more than $1 billion outside the United States and Canada, a sign that Nolan’s original spectacle still travels better than most franchise fare. Donna Langley, chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment, described the movie as an ambitious, brilliantly executed generational event that has energized theatrical moviegoing. The return continues Nolan’s relationship with Universal, which began five years ago after he left Warner Bros. following more than a decade there to make the three hour biopic Oppenheimer with the studio.
