On Oct. 6, Cristiano Ronaldo addressed his early departure from Portugal's national team training camp, saying head coach Jorge Jesus broke promises about his role. In a 1,740 word Instagram statement, the 41 year old captain described a dispute over playing time and called the situation a serious breach of trust. According to Ronaldo, Jesus proposed that Ronaldo play against Wales, remain in Portugal for matches against Norway and Denmark, then return before the team played at the Dragão. Ronaldo rejected the plan immediately, saying his status as captain made the arrangement feel wrong, even if he would not have played in the away matches. So Why Did Ronaldo Leave? Ronaldo said Jesus later asked him on Sept. 27 to be ready for 30 minutes against Norway. Ronaldo warmed up after halftime but never entered the match, which Ronaldo described as the coach failing to honor a direct promise. Two days later, Ronaldo said he and Jesus agreed the coach would explain the mix up at a Sept. 30 press conference. Ronaldo claimed Jesus instead spoke with an aggressive, high and mighty attitude, marking what Ronaldo viewed as the second broken commitment. Ronaldo then left camp early, insisting that his exit did not interfere with Portugal's technical or tactical decisions, while apologizing to his teammates and the Portuguese public.
