Donald Trump is facing new Senate scrutiny after a Belgian diamond industry group gave a jeweled ring intended for him to the U.S. ambassador on June 28, 2026, followed by a July 24 exemption for European diamonds from the latest U.S. tariffs. The Antwerp World Diamond Center denies the gift and policy change were connected. AWDC President Isidore Mörsel presented Ambassador Bill White with the oversized ring, designed by Antwerp jeweler David Gotlib. The 18 karat gold piece features 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, plus a jeweled presidential seal, a “250” anniversary marker, a diamond “T,” and Superman style shields marked “45” and “47.” Its estimated value is $25,000 to $35,000. Did the Ring Come With a Policy Perk? The timing has drawn attention because Belgium’s diamond trade had been hit by Trump’s tariff policies. Trump imposed a 20 percent tariff on European imports, including luxury goods and jewelry, before the European diamond sector received an exemption last September; after the Supreme Court struck down that tariff system in February, Trump reintroduced a 10 percent tariff. AWDC told Reuters that talks about U.S. import tariffs were “entirely separate” from the ring. Senator Elizabeth Warren, however, says Democrats are seeking more information about the gift and the group’s dealings with the Trump administration. “This looks like cartoonish corruption,” Warren told Rolling Stone, arguing that Trump has repeatedly appeared to reward companies that court him with praise or expensive gifts.
