Joseph Lynch , now 61, was charged Wednesday with the alleged rape and murder of 10 year old George “Junior” Burdynski, who disappeared from Brentwood, Maryland, in May 1993. Prince George’s County police said the long dormant case moved forward after a witness interview in May 2026. George Burdynski’s remains have never been found, despite an early search involving local police and federal investigators. Lynch is the only person ever charged in the child’s disappearance and alleged killing. What reopened the cold case? According to police, investigators spoke with a former Brentwood resident while examining newer sexual assault allegations involving Lynch. The witness was 13 in 1993 and told detectives he was inside a home with Lynch and Burdynski on the day Burdynski vanished. Police said the witness accused Lynch of directing him to sexually assault Burdynski, who was then allegedly killed during the attack. Lynch is already in custody after being charged in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of two teenage boys between 2007 and 2014, while the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office pursues the decades old case.
