Magic: The Gathering has been collecting pop culture worlds like trading cards themselves. Since The Walking Dead kicked off the franchise’s modern crossover era in 2020, the Universes Beyond line has expanded through Secret Lair releases, promos, and full playable sets packed with recognizable characters and fan service. Not every collaboration lands with the same force, but the strongest ones do more than slap a familiar logo onto a card. They bring the source material into the mechanics, artwork, and tiny lore details, giving longtime fans an actual reason to shuffle up and play. Two Collabs That Understood the Assignment Transformers earned serious collector appeal through multiple Secret Lair drops and its appearance in The Brothers’ War. The Optimus Prime and Megatron cards are especially clever: they can flip into their vehicle forms, and the three card designs create a panorama when displayed together. Even though the cards reinterpret existing Magic mechanics, the character-driven art and references make the crossover feel remarkably on-brand. Marvel’s first major Magic crossover arrived through a November 2024 Secret Lair release built around Commander play. Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, Storm, and Wolverine each anchor a deck concept with supporting reprints and alternate versions of other spells. And while Dungeons & Dragons remains one of Magic’s most natural team-ups, it does not count as Universes Beyond because both properties belong to Wizards of the Coast.
