The event gives hundreds of amateur boxers a chance to compete in front of coaches, scouts, and Tyson himself. Tyson told interviewer Babcock that he wants to help restore amateur boxing to the prominence it had when Tyson competed as a teenager in the early 1980s. Tyson also raised concerns about the sport’s Olympic future, making the showcase feel bigger than a celebrity appearance or a polished photo opportunity. “This is my legacy, God willing,” Tyson said. The former youngest heavyweight champion believes participation can change the lives of the athletes involved, while making clear that his own turn in the spotlight has passed: “Mike Tyson had his turn.
