Reiner was already facing two first degree murder counts tied to the deaths at the couple’s Brentwood home. He has remained jailed without bail since February, and a conviction could bring life without parole or potentially the death penalty, although the Los Angeles County district attorney has not decided whether to pursue capital punishment. What Happens Before Trial? According to prosecutors, Reiner allegedly stabbed his 78 year old father and 70 year old mother before leaving the residence and checking into a Santa Monica hotel. Authorities arrested Reiner later that night near a gas station in South Los Angeles, while prosecutors have not yet publicly laid out their full case. The indictment was returned July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, eliminating the need for a preliminary hearing. The next pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15, and it remains unclear whether Reiner will pursue an insanity defense.
