Robert Irwin and Bindi Irwin are keeping their late father, Steve Irwin , present through family traditions, wildlife work and everyday memories. Robert honored Steve during his Dancing with the Stars victory last November, while Bindi shared in June 2025 that her daughter Grace watches Steve’s documentaries and is already showing his unmistakable curiosity. Before Robert stepped onto the Dancing with the Stars stage, he wore one of Steve’s button-down shirts for at least one dance. Robert also wore a ring he made from keys found in Steve’s office, calling both items personal reminders of home and the values his father passed down. How Does Steve Irwin Stay Part of the Family? Steve died at age 44 on September 4, 2006, after a stingray barb struck him while he was filming the documentary Ocean’s Deadliest at Australia’s Batt Reef. Robert said bringing Steve into his DWTS experience made sense because the competition changed his life and connected directly to the legacy he continues through conservation. Bindi, Terri and Robert continue that work through Australia Zoo, the Wildlife Warriors nonprofit and the annual Steve Irwin Gala. Bindi has also introduced Grace, now 5, to “Grandpa Crocodile” through Steve’s wildlife documentaries, giving the next generation a front-row seat to his famous energy. Bindi has described Grace as a fearless animal lover who believes she is responsible for Australia Zoo’s residents. Terri told E! that Grace’s wonder, curiosity and nonstop enthusiasm remind her of Steve, who approached nature with the energy of a perpetual 3-year-old.
