Savannah Guthrie ’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains at the center of an Arizona disappearance investigation, and a man detained in the case now plans to sue for $2.5 million. Carlos Palazuelos filed a notice of claim on Monday, July 27, 2026, roughly six months after being released without charges. Palazuelos says Pima County deputies stopped him in February while he was driving with his wife and detained him at gunpoint after he exited the vehicle. According to the filing, he spent approximately seven to eight hours in custody before being released, despite authorities allegedly lacking probable cause. Who Else Is Seeking Damages? Palazuelos is seeking $2.5 million for alleged assault, false arrest, negligence, defamation, and false imprisonment. The claim names Pima County, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Chris Nanos, and Detective Earl Gieron as defendants, while Palazuelos’ attorneys argue that the public arrest unfairly linked him to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Daniel Maddox, who was also allegedly handcuffed and detained at gunpoint outside his family home, is seeking $250,000 over similar claims. Josefina Maddox, the homeowner, is seeking another $250,000 for alleged damage to the property, including a broken doorframe, damaged paint and ceiling tiles, and a damaged attic entrance during a search. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and Pima County had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. The search for Nancy Guthrie has continued since authorities said she was abducted on January 31, leaving this legal challenge as a new pressure point in a case already drawing national attention.
