Shelley Fabares , known for The Donna Reed Show and Coach , died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, in Los Angeles at age 82, her family said. The actor built a career across sitcoms, television movies, pop music and films opposite Elvis Presley. Fabares played Mary Stone on ABC’s The Donna Reed Show , which aired 275 episodes from 1958 through 1966. Fabares appeared in 192 episodes before leaving the series in 1965, establishing the wholesome TV image that followed her into a string of teen-focused movies. Her Resume Had Serious Range On Coach , Fabares portrayed TV news anchor Christine Armstrong, the romantic partner of Craig T. Nelson’s college football coach Hayden Fox. The sitcom ran for 199 episodes from 1989 to 1997, and Fabares earned Emmy nominations for supporting comedy actress in both 1993 and 1994. Fabares also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Johnny Angel” in 1961, then appeared with Elvis Presley in Girl Happy and Clambake . Her credits included the acclaimed 1971 television movie Brian’s Song , where she played Joy Piccolo, along with Fantasy Island , One Day at a Time , The Love Boat and The Practice . Born in Santa Monica, California, in January 1944, Fabares grew up around Hollywood and made an early television appearance on The Loretta Young Show in 1954. Her family described her as a celebrated performer and a deeply loving person, asked for privacy while grieving, and said her work and the memories she created would endure.
