French TikTok creator Sonia Bellina was found partially burned in a vineyard in Saint-Gilles on Aug. 12, one day after authorities opened a murder investigation. On Aug. 19, the Nîmes Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that two men had been arrested; by Aug. 20, one had been released and the other remained in police custody. Bellina was known for lip-sync videos on TikTok. According to her sister, Bellina went missing after saying she was heading out on Aug. 10, and relatives did not hear from her again before her body was discovered two days later. What Do Authorities Know So Far? The Nîmes criminal investigation unit said both men were detained based on evidence indicating possible direct or indirect involvement in the case. Prosecutors later said the evidence did not establish one man’s involvement, while a judge approved an extension keeping the second man in custody. Authorities ordered an autopsy for Aug. 13, but prosecutors have not released the results. Bellina’s family has also faced cruel online comments, including claims that she “deserved what happened to her,” according to reports from French media and the BBC. Mourad Battikh, the lawyer representing Bellina’s family, said the family is enduring an “extremely violent ordeal” and would not make additional public statements while grieving. The murder investigation remains active, and no court has determined the detained man’s guilt.
