Taylor Sheridan is facing a copyright lawsuit filed Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, by writer Lauren J. Salkin, who claims the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone borrowed from her 2016 pitch for a Western drama called Sovereign Nation. The lawsuit also names 101 Studios, Paramount and Elevate Entertainment as defendants. According to court documents obtained by Variety, Salkin pitched Sovereign Nation to Sheridan’s management company, Elevate Entertainment, and was allegedly told Sheridan was unavailable for television projects. The complaint says Yellowstone moved toward a Paramount greenlight within months, before premiering on June 20, 2018. What Does the Lawsuit Claim? Salkin’s legal team points to several alleged overlaps, including a tribal casino serving as a political and development hub, a casino office confrontation about expanding beyond reservation borders, trust land, limited zoning rules and a 99 year lease structure. The complaint also cites recurring master plan imagery as a shared visual device for depicting a fight over territory. The lawsuit says Salkin’s pitch deck proposed Danny Huston and Gil Birmingham , who later appeared in Yellowstone in roles the complaint describes as structurally comparable to figures in Sovereign Nation. Sheridan, Paramount, 101 Studios and Elevate Entertainment had not immediately responded to Variety’s requests for comment, so the allegations remain claims in active litigation, not established findings.
