Ted Sarandos said Wednesday that Netflix plans a broad theatrical release for the KPop Demon Hunters sequel, signaling a bigger cinema strategy for the streamer. Speaking at Bloomberg Screentime in Los Angeles, the Netflix co CEO also outlined longer theatrical windows for La Bola Negra and upcoming releases including Narnia. La Bola Negra will receive Netflix’s first full 45 day theatrical window, but Sarandos made clear it will not be a one off experiment. Greta Gerwig ’s Narnia and the animated Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory are also set for wide theatrical releases next year, while The Further Mis Adventures of Cliff Booth will arrive in IMAX in November. Why Is Netflix Going Bigger in Theaters? Sarandos said Netflix is separating films by audience and format instead of forcing every title into the same release plan. Arthouse movies such as La Bola Negra can benefit from extended cinema runs, while broad family films such as KPop Demon Hunters can reach viewers who want a communal big screen experience and may return for repeat viewings. The Further Mis Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher, written by Quentin Tarantino, and starring Brad Pitt , will become Netflix’s first movie to receive an IMAX release. Sarandos argued that a theatrical run can serve passionate moviegoers without automatically reducing a film’s value on Netflix, a balancing act that makes the KPop Demon Hunters sequel one of the streamer’s most closely watched cinema tests.
