Tucson police have located the elderly woman seen pointing what appeared to be a handgun at an alleged Ross shoplifting suspect on August 1, but officers say a potential aggravated assault investigation cannot fully move forward until they identify and find the man she confronted. The incident reportedly began around 10 a.m. at a Tucson Ross store, where employees reported a shoplifting. Video later spread online showing a man leaving with suitcases, backpacks and purses while the store alarm sounded. Why Is the Investigation Stuck? According to the Tucson Police Department, officers responded, gathered statements and reviewed surveillance footage after the reported theft. The suspected shoplifter was gone by the time police investigated, leaving detectives without a person who could potentially serve as the victim in an aggravated assault case. Police have since made contact with the armed bystander featured in the viral footage, but locating the alleged shoplifter remains the key next step. Investigators say they would need to find and interview him, if he agrees to cooperate, before deciding how the apparent parking lot confrontation should proceed legally.
